Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) Practice Exam

More than half the CPO exam comes from a single domain. Not close to half, over half: Clinical Principles, Testing, and Procedures accounts for 52.2% of the 100 scored questions, 63 items, which dwarfs the other four domains combined.

The dominant domain covers a long list of hands-on procedures: recording case history, visual acuity testing (Snellen, pinhole, Allen figures, and more), Amsler grid testing, automated blood pressure, stereoacuity and color vision, ocular motility and pupillary testing, tonometry, visual field screening, autorefraction, administering diagnostic eye drops, corneal testing, fundus photography, OCT. Fifteen separate tasks live inside this one domain, versus four to seven in each of the others.

The remaining four domains split the rest: Contact Lenses at 14.5% (18 items), Ophthalmic Optics and Dispensing at 11.1% (13 items), Professional Issues at 11.1% (13 items, including HIPAA, OSHA, and CMS compliance), and Science of the Eye at 11.1% (13 items).

CPC uses a modified Angoff method to set the passing standard, subject matter experts estimate item difficulty, and the result gets equated across exam forms so the bar stays consistent version to version. AOA membership isn't required to sit for the exam or hold the certification.

Given that one domain is worth more than the other four combined, an evenly-split study plan is working against the actual test structure by definition. Our question set mirrors the real weighting, concentrated on clinical testing and procedures, with the rest distributed across contact lenses, optics, professional issues, and eye science in proportion to how the exam actually scores them.
